Private Label Beer Sidebar: Web Exclusive

Wines aren’t the only quaffs being marketed as private label these days, either. Brasserie Beck, a contemporary Belgian-style brasserie, already boasted the largest Belgian beer list in Washington D.C., “but I thought it would be cool to have our own beer,” says general manager Thor Cheston. “We sell a lot of mussels and a lot of fish. So I wanted a beer with a light malt profile, some spice character, a little bitterness to cut through cream sauces.” Brouweriji de Musketiers took the guidelines and brewed up Antigoon, named for a legendary giant who terrorized Antwerp. At $9, a middling draft price here, it has bumped up overall sales. “Beer dorks hear about something new, and they want to try it,” he concludes.
