Review: Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Special Release Coy Hill Rye

Note: This review of Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Special Release Coy Hill Rye reflects the personal opinions of Editor Kyle Swartz. This bottle was sent to him as a media sample.

This new release is a barrel-proof Tennessee rye whiskey matured atop the distillery’s highest elevation point. Serving as this year’s expression in the annual limited series, it marks the first time a rye whiskey aged in Coy Hill barrelhouses has been bottled as a Single Barrel release. Made with Jack Daniel’s signature Tennessee Rye mash bill of 70% rye, 18% corn and 12% malted barley, the whiskey was charcoal mellowed before entering new, charred American white oak barrels in 2016. Maturing atop Coy Hill for ten years across Barrelhouse 1–13, it experienced the seasonal temperature swings of high elevation, according to the company. Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Special Release Coy Hill Rye comes offered at barrel proof ranging from 128.7-148.5. SRP: $89.99 per 750-ml. bottle.

Nose

Sweet heat, cinnamon, stone fruits, toasted gingerbread, brown sugar, rye spice, spearmint, dark candied fruits, cherrywood, tons of cherry and oak. Which is to say this is an extremely complex and enjoyable nose.

Palate

That high quality and complexity continues onto the palate. Tons more cherry and rye spice. Rich oak, ginger candies, dark leather, cherry cola, black tea, dark candied fruits, earthy spearmint. And, of course, plenty of heat from that high proof. This rye packs a punch, with layers of rich flavors to match its cask-strength bottling. Superb!

Finish

Long finish, deep Kentucky hug. Cocoa, dark fruits, white spice, dry dark cherry.

Upshot

We all know by now that Coy Hill means world-class quality. This single barrel rye from the now-legendary barrelhouses lives up to that reputation. The 2026 Single Barrel Special Release has more than enough big bold fruit and wonderful tertiary notes to match up with the heat from 120-140 proof. But this is no alcohol monster, like some Jack Daniel’s single barrel cask strength ryes. This is much more balanced: a high-octane treat that offers waves of flavors with immense depth: a top-shelf offering, for sure. Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Special Release Coy Hill Rye is a bottle of the year contender.
