Sagamore Whiskey has released an eight-year-old Bottled in Bond Straight Rye Whiskey. The 100-proof rye became available nationwide September 1.
Sagamore distilled the whiskey in spring 2018 at its Baltimore facility and aged it for eight years. The whiskey meets the requirements of the Bottled in Bond Act of 1897, which requires whiskey to come from a single distiller and distillery during one distilling season, age for at least four years and enter the bottle at 100 proof.
The new expression combines Sagamore’s high-rye and low-rye mash bills. The company uses the two mash bills as part of its approach to Maryland-style rye whiskey.
The whiskey has aromas of powdered sugar, leather and baking spices, according to the company. The palate includes grilled peach, brown sugar and sweet cherry while the finish includes rye bread, baked apple crumble and maple syrup.
“Seeing this whiskey go from the still to the bottle after eight years is incredibly rewarding,” said Ryan Norwood, master distiller at Sagamore Whiskey. “We’ve had a long time to watch these barrels develop, and this release really shows what makes Maryland Style so special to us. It has plenty of character and depth, but it’s still approachable and easy to enjoy. Knowing that we distilled, aged and bottled this whiskey right here in Maryland makes this one especially meaningful for our team, and we’re excited to finally share it with whiskey drinkers across the country.”
Sagamore Bottled in Bond Straight Rye Whiskey is available at select retailers nationwide and at the Sagamore Whiskey distillery. It carries a suggested retail price of $59.99 for a 750-ml. bottle.
Sagamore said the release is part of its effort to produce whiskey entirely in Maryland.
