Consumer Spending on Alcohol On-Premise Increases

A recent report on NPR’s Planet Money Blog noted that consumer spending on alcohol in the U.S. hasn’t changed all that much in the past 30 years. The big difference is where people are spending on alcohol. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Americans spent 40% of their total dollars for alcohol in bars and restaurants in 2011, compared to 24% spent on-premise in 1982. What’s more, alcohol prices between 1982 and 2011 fell 39% in stores, yet increased 79% in bars and restaurants.
