The Prisoner Wine Company has released the 2023 Corrections Napa Valley Syrah, its annual limited-edition wine and art collaboration focused on people impacted by the justice system.
The label features Black Bird by artist Omari Booker. Booker said his work follows the philosophy of “freedom through art.” The artwork draws on a bird that visited his window while he was incarcerated.
The 2023 Corrections is a blend of 93% syrah and 7% viognier. The wine carries a Napa Valley appellation, with 93% of the fruit from Napa Valley and 7% from Sonoma Valley. The wine comes from Wappo Hill 619 Syrah and Kunde Viognier vineyards.
The winery aged the wine for 18 months in French oak, with 45% new French oak, 23% one-year-old French oak and 32% older French oak. The wine has 15.5% alcohol by volume, 6.3 g/L total acidity and a pH of 3.6.
The winery’s tasting notes cite blue fruit, black olive, bay leaf, woodland herbs, licorice, vanilla bean, cigar box and ripe white peach on the aroma. The palate contains blue fruit, spice, vanilla and herbal notes, with acidity and tannins contributing to the finish. The viognier adds peach notes.
The 2023 vintage began three to four weeks later than the previous 10-year average following rainfall and cold temperatures into April and May. The winery said the growing season extended into October.
The 2023 Corrections Napa Valley Syrah retails for $100.
