Cooper & Thief Sauvignon Blanc 2016

Cooper & Thief Cellarmasters is set to release its first wine aged in ex-tequila barrels. The 2016 Cooper & Thief Sauvignon Blanc is aged for three months in ex-Casa Noble Añejo tequila barrels.

The wine is 78% sauvignon blanc, 12% French colombard and 10% sémillon and other whites. Cooper & Thief Sauvignon Blanc has citrus and spice notes reminiscent of a blue agave tequila, the company says, giving way to toasty vanilla flavors from the barrels. Aging in ex-tequila barrels creates a richness in the structure, the company says, balanced with refreshing acidity and finishing with a subtle heat.

Cooper & Thief Cellarmaster Jeff Kasavan drew inspiration from the success of his Red Blend aged in bourbon barrels to explore how spirits barrel aging could enrich the flavors of a white wine. The former new French oak barrels are sourced from tequila distiller Casa Noble, where they small batch age their Añejo expression for two years.

The 2016 Cooper & Thief Sauvignon Blanc will arrive just in time for Cinco de Mayo. The suggested retail price is $29.99 per 750-ml. bottle.
