In creating the third release in The Macallan’s limited-release Edition Series, which focuses on special production treatments, the Edrington company turned to the luxury perfume-maker Roja Dove.
The partnership focused on aromas.
Dove provided his “remarkable sensory knowledge and experience to describe distinctive aromas in particular oak casks,” the company says. He worked with The Macallan Master Whisky Maker Bob Dalgarno to select dominant notes to help shape the character of The Macallan No. 3.
The whisky comes from a combination of American and European casks. The Macallan No. 3 is 48.30% ABV and has aromas of vanilla ice cream, oak and fresh florals, the company reports, while flavors include fruit, vanilla, fruit cake with notes of apricot, pear and green apple.
The suggested retail price is $95 per 750-ml. bottle. Macallan No. 3 is available this month, with only 250,000 bottles available globally.
