Forget BYOB: A growing number of D.C.-area watering holes allow patrons to bring—or order in—their own food.
Why would you do this? According to a Washington Post article, bar owners say the benefits are two-fold: Customers can save money on meals while the establishment cuts costs by eliminating the need for a kitchen, food service staff and groceries.
Plus in places where great food options are plentiful, the bars don’t have to compete with the restaurants and customers can get the best of both. It’s also a way for guests to eat healthier when they go out to a bar.
Board Room, which opened in D.C.’s Dupont Circle just over a year ago, is one bar that lets guests bring their own food in. And people bring everything from a slow cooker full of chili to boxes of cereal and milk.
World of Beer in Arlington, VA, recently expanded its menu to include chicken wings, flat breads and tacos. But it still allows customers to bring in food from other restaurants for lunch or dinner. A nearby P.F. Chang’s also delivers food to patrons at the bar.
As one bar owner interviewed point out, it’s a good idea for people to have some food in their stomachs, especially if they’re planning to stay for a length of time, “but there’s no reason they have to buy it here.”
